Nissan Terrano  2.7 TDi

Modify the tow bar:

You might have noticed that the tow bar is always scratching some where when you do serious 4x4 obstacles.

Here is a simple modification where you can win 90mm of height and while you are at it you can also fit high lift jack jacking points.

The original tow bar had these brackets welded on the sides to lower the bottom bracket.

I used a normal 230mm Bosch angle grinder and cut it off. I then welded the original bottom piece perpendicular onto the cross section and added a 500x10mm base plate for extra strength. I have cut the base plate over its diagonal and welded the triangle shaped plate on the back. WARNING: You must have a proper welding machine to do this. You must use at least 3.5mm rods. Using a small little hobby thingy will not do the trick. The best is if you can somebody with a MIG welder to weld it for you. I also cut a hole into the plate to use as recovery point for my D-shackle.
While doing the mod I also attached jacking points for the high lift jack. Because the big plastic bumper is so wide I had to support the pipes with angle iron. I used 40x40x5mm angle iron and a 32mm pipe with 2.5mm wall. Supported at the top with a 5mm plate.
When i fixed the tow bar I realised that the number plate is a problem. So I removed the whole number plate with backing plate. This worked out quite nice because I could attach the electric plug next to the tow bar, far from any harm. I used a square number plate on the back door and had to move the Terrano badge down to make space for the number plate.
This works great, I do not have any problems with the tow bar anymore.
